Argentina-Belgium preview - World Cup 2014
There are many similarities between Argentina’s and Belgium’s performances during World Cup 2014: both have won all their matches; both have emerged as winners of supposedly weaker groups; both the teams have appeared struggling to goal scores in spite of the all-win record; and none of the teams have run into a strong attack so far in the tournament.
And there is one stark difference: while Argentina depends entirely on Lionel Messi to score or create goals, Belgium has an array of goal scorers and creators. This one difference could prove the key factor that would determine the outcome of the match.
Argentina-Belgium Preview
These teams have met thrice before. Argentina won two, while Belgium won the remaining one. The most memorable match is the one in the semi final of the 1986 world cup, in which Maradona scored two second-half goals to lead his team to the finals. The onus is on Lionel Messi to emulate the so-called God. He has carried Argentina thus far, with him playing a part in almost all the goals his team has scored. Perhaps, a little help from his teammates would help too.
Belgium relies more on team work than on individual brilliance. They have a peculiar habit of scoring all their goals in the second half. They have not scored a single goal before the 70th minute. And most of their goals were scored by substitutes.
You can safely say that this is the first time the defences of both Argentina and Belgium come face to face with a high-quality attack. Whoever is going to resist stronger will come out on top.
Players
The Belgium defence, led by Vincent Kompany, definitely appears stronger. Moreover, Argentina will miss wing back Marcos Rojo due to suspension. This will pave an easier way for Belgian wingers Eden Hazard and Kevin Mirallas. Romelu Lukaku will once again start upfront for Belgium along with Kevin De Bruyne, with Divock Origi being likely to appear as an impact substitute.
Messi and Angel di Maria are the only in-form players the Argentina attack. Messi will try to settle scores with the Belgian goal-keeper Thibaut Courtois, who plays for Atletico Madrid. Believe it or not, Messi has never scored against Courtois. Is there a grander stage than the world cup quarter final to settle some old scores?
Argentina-Belgium Prediction
Argentina’s defence is vulnerable to quick counter attacks. Unless Messi produces his best performance in the Argentinean colours, Belgium is likely to run away with the match.
