Manchester United will shock the football world if they can beat Bayern Munich in the away leg of the Champions League quarterfinals on this Wednesday. Usually, the two teams start as equals. But in this season, the Munich side has soared to new heights, while the Manchester outfit has plunged to greater depths. This is United’s chance to show the world, or perhaps to themselves as well, that they belong to the top echelons of the European football.
A United win is not out of the realms of probability. It will be a smart long shot. They have been getting back to top form in recent games. And they have a pretty good record in the continental league, in spite of their EPL sorrows. They won their last two EPL matches in thumping fashion, and they held Bayern Munich in between these games.
Bayern Munich have gone the opposite direction. They have been winless in their last three games. First they were held by the mercurial Hoffenheim side; then happened the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford; and finally they were beaten by Augsburg in the last weekend. Admittedly, a weakened Bayern side played against Augsburg. Still, a loss is a loss.
Bayern will not be back to their full strength for this crucial tie. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Javi Martinez will miss the match. That will mean the United defence has to contend with Arjen Robben, Franck Ribéry, Mario Mandzukic, Thomas Müller and Mario Götze only.
Wayne Rooney is injured, but he is expected to play still. Juan Mata has emerged as an unlikely star for United in the injury-forced absence of Robin Van Persie in recent times. Can the Rooney-Mata pair work their magic in Munich?
