Germany-Algeria preview - World Cup 2014
Any day, you will back Germany when they play against an unfancied team like Algeria. They are the masters of dispatching minnows. But this one has a bit of history going with it. In the 1982 world cup in Spain, Germany and Austria ‘fixed’ a match which resulted in the ouster of Algeria in the group stage itself. This match is their chance to take revenge.
Remember, this has been a world cup of revenges. The Netherlands had their revenge over Spain. The USA had their revenge over Ghana. Can Algeria have their revenge?
Germany-Algeria Preview
Based on the German team’s performance so far, the revenge will be a Herculean task. Germany has performed with their usual machine-like efficiency. Plus, they have added a bit of flair too. But, would you believe it, they have never beaten Algeria in a soccer match. These teams met twice, in 1964 in a friendly match and in 1982 in that world cup. On both occasions, the Africans emerged victorious.
Algeria is likely to boost up their defense ahead of this match. They will try to frustrate the German forwards and launch lethal counter attacks on the break.
Players
The German strikers, especially Thomas Muller, will not mind much as they have scored seven goals so far. Mario Goetze and Mesut Özil are due for some goals. Overall, Germany has no apparent weaknesses, except their defence is susceptible to quick counter attacks through the flanks.
Algeria has two speedy strikers to exploit the weakness: Sofiane Feghouli and Islam Slimani.
Germany-Algeria Prediction
None of the indicators would suggest an Algerian win.
