Germany - Poland betting tips and match preview
Poland takes on Germany in a Group C encounter in the Euro 2016 at the Stade de France in Paris. It is a match that could potentially determine the winners of the group. Both the teams have won their opening fixtures. They are expected to win their respective final group games too: Germany against Northern Ireland and Poland against Ukraine.
When Germany plays, they are almost always the bookmakers’ darlings. Bet365 has odds of 6/1 for a Poland win and 10/3 for a draw. One man can make those odds look silly and earn you some revenue: Robert Lewandowski.
Germany
Germany appeared in fuel-saving mode in their 2-1 win over Ukraine in the opening fixture. Mesut Ozil showed sparks of brilliance in the second half. Jerome Boateng made an incredible goal-line save and Bastian Schweinsteiger scored a late goal. But the rest of the teammates – notably Thomas Müller and Mario Götze – had a quiet game. They have to up the ante against Poland, perhaps the best counter-attacking team in Europe.
Germany suffered a 2-0 defeat against Poland in the away Euro 2016 qualification game in 2014. But that was the only time they lost against their increasingly noisy neighbours in the last two decades.
Poland
When you talk about Poland, you talk about Lewandowski, especially if the match is against Germany. He has been the most predatory striker in the Bundesliga for the last few seasons. He knows what the German defenders are capable of. If he gets some space to work with in the penalty box, all Manuel Neuer will have to do will be fetch the ball from the back of the net.
Lewandowski will not be the only one Neuer will dread tonight. Arkadiusz Milik may have been a disaster when he joined the Bundesliga as an 18-year-old prodigy. But now he has grown into a lethal striker, after a stint with Ajax in the Dutch top division. If Germany is so focused on Lewandowski, Milik can hurt them.
Germany - Poland match facts
- Mats Hummels has recovered from injury and could return to bolster the German defence.
- Poland’s first-choice goal-keeper Wojciech Szczesny will miss this match due to a thigh injury. Lukasz Fabianksi, the former Arsenal keeper who now plays for Swansea, will replace him.
- Götze’s floating role behind the striker was ineffective against Ukraine. But Germany’s coach Joachim Low is likely to persist with him and his position.
