The USA starts their World Cup 2014 against a familiar nemesis: Ghana. The USA played against Ghana in the last two world cups and got knocked out on both occasions in the process. Revenge is what they are looking for. And this is a season of revenge, as the Dutch vengeance against Spain shows us.

Ghana-United States Preview

The Americans will be glad that they are meeting Ghana in their first game. They will have two more games any way. But those games are against Germany and Portugal – in comparison with whom Ghana would appear a low-hanging fruit. The USA must get some points; otherwise, their qualifying hopes will be in jeopardy. The team is in good form, both in the CONCACAF qualification stage and friendly games after that.

Ghana too will be looking forward extend their dominance over the Americans. They would not be satisfied with nothing other than three points.

Ghana’s game is fast-paced and physical. They excel in quick counter attacks that catch opposition off guard. The USA’s defence is not strong and not fast either. The real battle will be on the midfield. Whoever wins the midfield battle will take away the points.

Prince Boateng and Asamoah Gyan, usual suspects to score against the USA, will start for Ghana.  Midfielders Kwadwo Asamoah and Andre Ayew will offer them solid support. The USA has the settled pair of Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore at the frontline. The team has shown excellent work ethic and team spirit in the recent matches.

There is no guarantee for a Ghana win here, even though they appear to be the favourites. The USA could succeed in getting at least a point from this fixture.
