Tottenham Hotspur-Southampton betting preview

Tottenham Hotspur-Southampton betting preview

Tottenham must win, for a variety of reasons. It will keep their Champions League ambitions, or at least the Europe League hopes, intact. It will douse the frustration of their fans. And ultimately it will keep their manager Tim Sherwood on the job.

Southampton cannot afford to lose. Their fans are happy and manager has the goodwill of all. But if they lose, their long-shot Europa League hopes will be permanently gone.

Southampton is coming into the match after scoring back to back wins. The team has lost just two matches in 2014. They played much better football than what the scoreline suggests in their 3-0 home loss against Liverpool.

Tottenham’s last two matches in the Premier League ended in defeat – first against Chelsea and then against Arsenal. The defeat against Arsenal would be harder to swallow. They controlled and dominated the game, but they could not find sufficient penetration. They badly miss a creative midfielder who can consistently produce defence-splitting passes.

The H2H record between the teams is even: five wins for each team in the last 10 games. But Spurs claim the recent bragging rights, with four wins in the last five games.

Tottenham is reeling under injury scare. Emmanuel Adebayor and Paulinho are out with injury. In their absence, Roberto Soldado, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Christian Eriksen will have to do the bulk of goal scoring and creation.

Southampton has the settled pair of Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert upfront. The team has an efficient defence too.
