Two Longshot Premier League Outright Tips for the 2024/25 Campaign
After an electrifying summer that saw England narrowly miss out on securing their first major international title in almost six decades following that heartbreaking loss to Spain in the UEFA Euro 2024 final, the focus now shifts back to the domestic scene. The Premier League remains the most competitive league, and the new campaign is rapidly approaching. In recent years, Manchester City have run roughshod over their rivals, claiming four titles on the bounce and aiming to make it five this season.
In the last two years, the Blues have been pushed by Arsenal, with the Gunners coming as close as physically possible to emerging victorious without actually getting their hands on the trophy. They took the title race down to the final day last term, only to ultimately be pipped to the crown once again. This year, they have been made contenders once again, with the latest soccer odds making them the +175 second favorites for the title.
However, it is the reigning champions who are still the +120 favorites, and with a squad brimming with talents such as Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne, it's clear to see why. But as most previews for the new campaign are on the league's frontrunners, we decided to take a look at some unfancied teams in the hopes of securing some betting value. Here are two longshot outright tips that could result in a healthy windfall, providing they live up to the billing.
Crystal Palace: Best of the Rest?
Since the arrival of Eintracht Frankfurt's Europa League-winning boss Oliver Glasner as the new manager of Crystal Palace back in February, The Eagles have undergone a remarkable transformation. Departing from the rigid system enforced by Roy Hodgson, the club outfit has emerged as one of the most captivating teams in the Premier League. And they are no longer looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone, or at least we think they won't be next term.
Palace is currently priced as a +20000 ninth favorite for the title next season which shows just how far not only them, but the rest of the division as a whole, are behind the title-chasing duo. As much as we'd love to see it, we can't imagine Glasner's side will be in the title race this season, but there is still plenty of value to be found on the Eagles. The Selhurst Park outfit is currently priced at +2000 to win the "without the Big Six" market, as well as having odds of +1200 to finish in the top six.
Much of their revival has been thanks to the emergence of striker Jean-Philippe Mateta. The French hitman has been lighting up the Olympics this summer and with his shirt tucked in, wouldn't look out of place alongside Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba in that glorious Newcastle United team of yesteryear. He is a +5000 outsider to win the Golden Boot.
The jewel in the Selhurst Park crown however is of course Eberechi Eze. The talented English international pulls the strings for the team, orchestrating their attacks and making things happen. He will have a much bigger workload next term following the departure of his partner in crime Michael Olise, with the Frenchman recently departing for the bright lights of Bayern Munich. Glasner must ensure that he invests the £50m received for his former star man wisely.
Leicester City: Written Off Too Early?
Leicester City soared to clinch the Championship crown last season with an impressive 97-point haul. They finished six points clear of third place and were the best team in the division all year long, with the veteran Jamie Vardy firing on all cylinders once more. However, despite their achievement and immediate return to the top flight, they are now seen as the overwhelming candidates for relegation. That should be considered somewhat of a shock, especially because one of the promoted teams was Ipswich Town, a team much further behind in their development following back-to-back promotions.
With the mercurial Riyad Mahrez and aforementioned Vardy leading the way, The Foxes famously secured the Premier League title just eight years ago in a historic underdog triumph, before adding the FA Cup to their relatively short list of accolades in 2021. While their performance has waned since those glory days, the odds of +1100 for a top-half finish paint an intriguing picture.
Recently, Leicester saw their manager Enzo Maresca depart for Chelsea, leading to the appointment of Steve Cooper, known for his commendable stint at Nottingham Forest. The Welsh boss' ability to unlock the potential of key players like Patson Daka, Wilfred Ndidi, and Harry Winks could be pivotal in securing Leicester's top-flight status. The team's knack for causing upsets across various competitions, including a memorable UEFA Champions League quarterfinal run, suggests that counting them out for relegation might be premature.
