UEFA Champions League Final Preview - Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid

UEFA Champions League Final Preview - Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid

The Champions League final is only a few days away and we have a mouth watering El Derbi madrileño in store for us. Atletico Madrid will be looking to secure a simply outstanding double in winning La Liga and a first ever Champions League while for Real Madrid, the coveted La Decima is in their sights.

Los Colchoneros are still unbeaten in the Champions League, having beaten tough opposition to reach this stage. In a relatively comfortable group with Zenit, Porto and Austria Wien, Diego Simeone’s men finished with ease with 5 wins and a draw. They comfortably set aside AC Milan in the round of 16 before facing their first big European test - fellow La Liga competitors, Barcelona. Having scored a crucial away goal in a 1-1 draw the Nou Camp, Atletico won the second leg 1-0 to reach the semifinals.

Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea awaited, and Atletico Madrid were underdogs again. With the reigning Europa League champions parking the bus and securing a vital 0-0 draw at the Vicente Calderon, many thought Atletico would suffer the same fate as Chelsea’s earlier opponents, PSG - especially after Fernando Torres had put his side 1-0 up. However, Atletico defied the odds, coming from behind to secure a famous 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge to clinch a place in Lisbon.

Real Madrid on the other hand, had a slightly tougher group featuring Galatasaray, Juventus and FC Copenhagen but that didn’t stop Los Blancos from topping the group unbeaten with 5 wins and a draw. They proceeded to rout Schalke 9-2 on aggregate before surviving a scare against Dortmund in the quarterfinals, progressing 3-2 on aggregate.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men then faced the reigning European champions, Bayern Munich - a huge test if they had any plans of winning La Decima. After winning the first leg at home 1-0, Madrid shocked the world by beating Pep Guardiola’s side 4-0 at the Allianz Arena to progress to the final in style.

And so, with the first ever Madrid derby in a Champions League final, who could win? In their last 5 meetings in all competitions, there have been 2 wins for each with a draw, highlighting Atletico’s recent rise from the shadows of their rivals with a recent win being in last year’s Copa del Rey final. Atletico - barring any injuries - will have a full strength team ready to play in the final, with noone suspended. Real Madrid on the other hand will be without the suspended Xabi Alonso while Jese is on the long term injury list. Putting all this into consideration, Real Madrid will still be favourites to win the Champions League with odds of 1.50@bet365.com - Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and company could be deemed too strong for Simeone’s men. However, Atletico - with star man, Diego Costa - have shown this season that the underdogs tag has suited them quite well and they’re in for a shout too with odds of 2.62@bet365.com.
