Uruguay v Costa Rica review - World Cup 2014
This match will have been a huge setback to Uruguay who were being touted as one of the favourites to qualify from their group.
The match kicked off at fairly slow pace with neither team really getting into their stride early on, the best chances falling to Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani but the Paris St Germain star failed to keep his composure and flashed a shot horribly wide. Uruguay were struggling to get get a foothold in midfield and had to rely on a set piece to lead to their opening goal. A free-kick was swung into the Costa Rica box and the referee had no choice but to point to the spot as Lugano was manhandled by Junior Diaz inside the penalty area. Cavani stepped up and comfortably converted the penalty to give Uruguay a first half lead. Uruguay pressed on until half-time, with Diego Forlan, in for the injured Luis Suarez, creating a few more chances but finding Costa Rica keeper Kaylor Navas in excellent form, keeping the score at 1-0.
From the start of the second half Costa Rica came out with different attitude and attacking intent. Pushing the full backs further forward, Arsenal striker Joel Campbell had more support and a cross into the box found him unmarked at the back post. Campbell finished the chance superbly and this gave Costa Rica huge confidence for the remainder of the match. It only took a few minutes for Costa Rica to take the lead, Duarte coming in at the far post to head home and make it 2-1. At this stage, all eyes were on the Uruguay bench, anticipating the arrival of Luis Suarez but it never came. With Uruguay getting desperate, Costa Rica substitute Marcos Urena went in on goal, rounded Muslera and made it 3-1. As the match moved towards the 90th minute Maxi Pereira lashed out a Joel Campbell in frustration and received his marching orders. The game ended with a shock 3-1 victory to Costa Rica.
This is a huge dent in the hopes of Uruguay, they will have expected to go into the England match with 3 points or at worse 1 point. It's clear that Luis Suarez is still not 100% fit but will probably be risked, just to give the team a boost of confidence if nothing else but the weaknesses shown against Costa Rica will have to be addressed. Little creativity in midfield and sluggish at the back, Uruguay will have to up their game defensively if they are to cope with England's attacking pace. With Italy also still to play, Uruguay have a massive task ahead of them if they are to qualify from the group.
Alternatively, Costa Rica will be going into their next match against Italy with huge confidence. Italy looked strong against England but Costa Rica have shown what a strong, athletic team they are and will be looking to repeat their second half performance against Uruguay in their next match. Kaylor Navas is a good goalkeeper and in Joel Campbell Costa Rica have a pacey, lively forward who can finish if given the ball in the right areas. If Costa Rica can take a point from this game and England v Uruguay ends in a draw, which is very feasible, Costa Rica can cause a huge upset and qualify for the knock out stages of the tournament.
