World Cup 2014 - Group H Preview
The biggest sporting event is in one month’s time so here’s a preview of Group H, featuring Belgium, Russia, South Korea and Algeria. Belgium who are currently going through a golden generation will be playing in their first World Cup since 2002 while Russia will be looking to get out of the group stage for the first time in their history. South Korea - having finished in the round of 16 in the last World Cup - will aim to go even further while Algeria’s main goal will be to qualify from the group even if things look bleak.
Stars to look out for
As mentioned, Belgium have a host of stars to look out for with quality in nearly every position. The likes of Thibaut Courtois, Vincent Kompany, Kevin Mirallas, Romelu Lukaku, Axel Witsel and Thomas Vermaelen all play for some of the top clubs in the world or have experience at the highest level, but the focus will surely be on Chelsea’s Eden Hazard who is the star man.
As for South Korea, the star man is definitely Bayer Leverkusen's Son Heung-Min who despite being just 21-years-old, is already a fixture for both club and country, having scored 12 goals and assisted 7 this season. Algeria on the other hand, don’t have a lot of quality, with their only notable players being Valencia’s Sofiane Feghouli and Tottenham’s Nabil Bentaleb.
Lastly, Russia have a few key players in the likes of Roman Shirokov, Igor Denisov, Alexander Kerzhakov and Alexander Kokorin, but the star man from Euro 2012 will still be the main player to look out for in CSKA Moscow’s Alan Dzagoev.
Who could go through?
Belgium are favourites on paper to top the group with odds of 1.66 @ Bet365.com but one of Russia or South Korea could beat them to top the group as they have more experience on the international front. To qualifying from the group, Russia look more likely to do that with their odds of 1.40 @ Bet365.com compared to South Korea (2.75 @ Bet365.com). Algeria’s odds of 6.00 @ Bet365.com show that it is highly unlikely they’ll finish higher than 4th.
World Cup winners?
The only team in this group capable of winning the World Cup are Belgium - they have the talent to do so but whether they have the experience and mentality is another question. Their odds of winning the World Cup are 19.00 @ Bet365.com which speaks volumes as they are better odds than the likes of France, Holland and Italy - potentially a bet worth placing.
